A Guide to Splitboarding

Splitboarding 101: What You Need to Know

Snowboarding and skiing are both popular winter sports, but this year, many thrill-seekers are starting to fall in love with a new option called splitboarding. If you are looking for a new and exciting winter activity, here’s what you need to know about splitboarding.

The Basics of Splitboarding

A splitboard is a snowboard that is split down the middle to create a pair of short skis. You can’t use a splitboard to glide down the side of a mountain, but you can use it to travel uphill. In other words, splitboarding is just like cross-country skiing up a mountain.

At the top of the hill, snap the two pieces back together again to transform your splitboard back into a snowboard. This way, you can splitboard up the hill and snowboard back down it.

The Benefits of Splitboarding

Hiking or snowshoeing uphill is hard work, which is why many people are drawn to splitboarding. It’s considered less physically demanding. Because splitboarding makes the climb to the top easier, you will still have plenty of energy to enjoy the ride back down on your snowboard.

You also won’t have to carry extra equipment with you on your trip. Splitboards are designed to convert to snowboards, so everything you need to snowboard back down the hill will be attached to your feet.

Splitboarding also allows you to climb uphill away from the noise and chaos near commercial ski resorts. You can use your splitboard to travel uphill in the backcountry, where you can get a little peace.

The Drawbacks of Splitboarding

There are some drawbacks to trying splitboarding, including the costs. The only equipment you will need for this activity is the board itself, but a splitboard can set you back hundreds of dollars.

You will also need to take the time to learn how to properly splitboard. Don’t assume that splitboarding will be a breeze simply because you are an avid snowboarder or skier. It takes time to get comfortable on a splitboard, so it’s best to work with a professional to learn the basics before you take your first uphill trip.

How to Stay Safe while Splitboarding

There are risks involved with every winter sport, including splitboarding. However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself while splitboarding

First, remember to pace yourself. Even if this isn’t your first time splitboarding, it’s important to take your time and find a good rhythm.

Do not attempt to convert your splitboard into a snowboard until you have reached a flat area of snow. You should also give yourself plenty of time to catch your breath before you start this conversion. If you start the transition as soon as you reach the top of the hill, you may exhaust or injure yourself.

Remember, it’s not a race. Take your time and enjoy this fun winter sport!
