Since 1989, The Conservation Alliance has protected outdoor spaces and wild places through the collective power of its member companies, of which Backpacker's Pantry was one of the first! Since 1989, The Conservation Alliance has “awarded over $31.9 million in grants and helped protect over 82 million acres and 4,570 river miles, remove or halt 38 dams, purchase 22 climbing areas, and designate five marine reserves.”
Their conservation efforts include the Mobilizing for Monuments campaign, which calls for the designation and expansion of national monuments throughout the western United States in order to protect these outdoor spaces.
They are currently rallying to establish the Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe’s ancestral homelands in southern California, Sáttítla, or the Medicine Lake Highlands, in California, the Dolores River National Monument in western Colorado, and the Chuckwalla National Monument in southern California. They are working to expand the Barryessa Snow Mountain National Monument and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, and have successfully established the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni - Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, which protects nearly 1 million acres of land surrounding the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
In 2023, The Conservation Alliance embarked on the Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip, which took them from Colorado to California to advocate for the permanent protection of the above National Monuments. They met with local business leaders, elected officials, tribal leaders, on-the-ground champions, and recreationalists.
With the help of Rivian, Flickr, and Nuestra Tierra, they produced the Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip Film, which will be released on April 18, 2024. You can view the official film trailer below:
Please join us in watching and sharing the film on April 18 and beyond, and sign the M4M pledge to help protect these monuments, our planet, and its wildlife and people.
