I had that meal on my back-packing tour, and It contains so much garlic, that it scared away vampires, bears and my boyfriend.
Normally I like backpackers pantry foods but this dish I would probably not buy again

Hi there, thanks for sharing your feedback. We're sorry the garlic was overwhelming. We'll take your comments into account to improve this dish. We appreciate your support and hope to serve you better next time!

My husband likes this one. It’s my least favorite. I was hoping for a more dominant coconut flavor.

    Do not Know

The meals did not arrive before I left on my trip. So I had to purchase another brand of freeze dried meals. I knew from previous experience that shipping was slow from Backpacker’s Pantry but I thought I had given enough time for the shipment to get to me.

    Hey David,

I am sorry the food didn't make it to you in time. Please reach out to me at info@backpackerspantry.com and we can make this right.

    Thanks!

    a great foundation

this is the entree i most regularly buy for it's consistent flavor and texture. it's on the subtle side for flavor, but i like adding chopped dried mango and can see it being a good canvas for whatever other add-ins you might be craving. meals with more assertive flavor can be very limiting, whereas this is more versatile. texture wise, it feels like rice and beans you just cooked - not crunchy, not strangely gummy or too soupy or weirdly astronaut-y. like a reliable pot of rice and beans you made at home. that's enough to keep me happy on the trail!

Thank you for leaving such an excellent review, Helen! We are so glad you enjoy our Cuban Coconut Rice & Black Beans. We love the idea of adding dried mango or using this meal as a base for creative outdoor cooking!

    Incredibly bland

This is so bland that it feels like something went terribly wrong in the production process. There is zero hint of any flavour and it’s even lacking salt. If plain beans and rice is your thing, then this would be great, but don’t expect anything more than that. It's so surprising since the other Backpacker Pantry food we've had is full of flavour, but this was such a letdown, especially after a big day of hiking.

Hi Nic. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! We pride ourselves in creating a wide variety of meals that cater to everyone's taste buds, and we are so sorry to hear that our Cuban Coconut Rice & Black Beans were not to yours. Bland

The beans dominate the taste and it's pretty bland. Not noticing any coconut or banana flavors.

    Love this Gluten Free meal

I ordered a large supply of assorted GF meals during 2020 pandemic. I'm celiac and it's next to impossible to find GF meals like this. I just ate
my first Backpacker's Pantry meal tonight because I noticed the best buy date was 2022. Absolutely delicious! Thank you so much
for making the extra effort for allergens. I love this food and the healthy ingredients!!

Thank you for the great review, Steve! We do our best to accommodate as many dietary restrictions as possible, and we are thrilled to hear that our meals work for you! So glad you enjoyed!

    Not so mich

While this dish is a good source of carbs and protein, it isn’t one of my personal favorites. (I recognize this is a personal thing). Just not into the flavor combinations of coconut, banana, onion and garlic powders combined with the beans and rice.

    Tasty enjoyment

I enjoyed this meal and thought it had the right balance of sustenance and flavor. The texture was just right and the portions more than enough to keep me fulfilled on those adventures!

Maybe I got a bad one..?

Backpackers Pantry is my go to brand, but the Cuban Coconut Beans & Rice, for me, didnt meet the mark.
I can only assume I got a bad one?
My experience was that the meal was completely devoid of flavor. No Banana, No Coconut...
It was really surprising as this brand is "S" tier for sure when it comes to freeze dried meals, and my experience on this one stood out.

All that said, don't let this rating sway your thoughts on the brand.
If you haven't tried the Pad Thai from Backpackers Pantry, you dont know what youre missing. You guys set the bar really high with that one! Best

    Perfect!

Packed this and several other BP meals for a section hike on the AT. This was amazing! Only thing lacking was a bit more heat but still delicious. This meal is technically made for 2 but it was so good I ate the entire bag for dinner after a 14 miler. Kept me satisfied well I to the morning and fueled me for a fasted early am trek. Great ounce to nutrient ratio!

    Flavorful

Using as emergency food, found the meal excitingly complex and flavorful...not enough to eat on the regular, but will be welcome in a disaster and much more tasty than other bean and rice camping meals

    Delicious!

This is my new favorite backpacking meal! Oh my word. With a little extra salt and lime it is 10000/10. I disagree with the reviews stating that the banana is too strong. Neither my boyfriend or myself could taste banana at all. Maybe just a *hint* of general sweetness.
I'm going to order 20 more.

    My favorite!

This is my favorite Backpacker's Pantry meal. I start to crave it when the hike is almost done. It's mostly a salty dish with a few small hints of banana when you get a bit of plantain. The coconut flavor is also subtle. It's plenty filling, even though there is no meat. I recommend try one before you pack a bunch of it, though, some of my friends did not care for this one. I grew up in the tropics so these flavors were familiar to me. I traded my other meals for their extra Cuban coconut rice, I didn't mind eating it several nights.

One of my favorite dehydrated meals

I recently blogged about my favorite freeze-dried meals, and couldn't forget this simply delicious must-try from Backpacker’s Pantry. I originally grabbed it for a side dish while on a multi-day backpacking excursion, but found out that this flavorful pick is a full meal on its own. The rice is flavored with coconut milk, giving you caribbean-esce flavor wherever you enjoy it. It not only has hearty black beans mixed in, but also natural freeze-dried banana pieces that add pleasant sweetness to the blend. It is also worth noting that the banana flavor isn’t an overly sweet, artificial one like a banana Laffy-Taffy. It is natural on the tongue, nourishing, and contains 2 servings in a bag, making it a perfectly hefty portion for me, myself, and I. Whoa! This is addicting

Cuban coconut beans & rice is so amazing. There is no overbearing banana smell like the last reviewer said. This is my go to meal. Filling, satisfying, and hits all the right taste buds!!

    A little too much banana

This was a great dish that powered me through a tough 10 mile afternoon on the Art Loeb Trail, but I was really put off by the strong banana smell and taste. For whatever reason I got almost no coconut at all.

    I’m a carnivore

This meal blew me away. The flavor was amazing. So good I didn’t even realize it was meat free. It would be great with chicken, but it was shockingly good on its own. (Eaten on day 2 of coyote gulch)

    Gotta have it!!

This product is totally vegan and really good. It says 2 serving but I ate the whole thing in one sitting. Pro tip - put this bad boy in a tortilla!
